As pressure on natural resources continues to grow, local initiatives are emerging with practical approaches that turn environmental challenges into economic opportunities. Where it starts: noticing what others overlook
VALMAR did not begin as a business idea in the traditional sense. It started with a simple observation: large amounts of fish waste are generated daily, often left unused and contributing to environmental pollution. As stated in the interview:
“The idea for VALMAR originated from the observation of large quantities of fish waste generated by markets and processing units, which are often discarded and cause environmental pollution.”
At that point, the question was not how to build a company, but how to rethink the problem itself. What if this waste was not waste at all?
The founders approached it from both scientific and practical angles:
“Together, they combine scientific knowledge and entrepreneurial vision to develop innovative solutions for the valorization of marine waste and the promotion of a circular economy.”
This shift in perspective shaped everything that followed.

Building through constraints: from idea to system
Turning an idea into a working model came with predictable challenges. Access to funding, equipment, and reliable supply chains were not immediately available. The team describes it clearly:
“The main challenges included access to funding and equipment, organizing raw material supply chains, and raising awareness about waste valorization.”
Rather than bypassing these constraints, the project evolved through them. Gradually, partnerships were built within the fisheries sector, and support programs helped structure the initiative. Over time, a functional system took shape—one that organizes the collection, processing, and transformation of fish waste into usable outputs such as fishmeal and organic fertilizers. Along the way, a key insight emerged:
“We learned that environmental challenges can become economic opportunities through innovation and determination.”
This was not just a lesson, but a principle guiding the project’s development.

Beyond production: positioning within sustainability
While VALMAR currently focuses on fishmeal production, its role extends beyond a single product. The process itself contributes to reducing pollution and limiting the environmental impact of organic waste. As highlighted:
“VALMAR directly supports environmental sustainability by converting organic marine waste into valuable products, reducing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions while promoting circular economy practices.”
The project also aligns with broader sustainability frameworks, particularly responsible consumption and marine ecosystem protection. Looking ahead, the ambition is to expand both in scale and in scope:
“Our vision is to scale up production, diversify products (including organic fertilizers and fish oil), strengthen partnerships, and expand into national and international markets.”
This expansion reflects continuity rather than a shift, an extension of the same core idea.
Taken as a whole, VALMAR’s journey is less about a single product and more about a consistent way of thinking. It starts with observation, moves through constraint, and evolves into a working system where nothing is treated as residual by default. What appears as waste is reintroduced into circulation, not through abstraction, but through a structured, grounded process.
