Port of Alicante launches real-time water quality monitoring technology
POSINODE technology, developed by Alicante-based scale-up Mediterranean Algae and installed by The Ocean Race with the support of the Port Authority of Alicante, is presented to national blue economy representatives from ten countries during the Steering Committee meeting of the WestMED Initiative.
Mediterranean Algae, an Alicante-based company specialized in marine biotechnology and environmental solutions for coastal industries, has deployed the first operational node of POSINODE, its technological infrastructure for real-time water quality monitoring. The installation has been carried out at Dock 10 in Alicante, the global headquarters of The Ocean Race, with the institutional support of the Port Authority of Alicante.

POSINODE integrates a telemetry station connected to a data platform that collects, processes, and enables the real-time visualization of physicochemical parameters, nutrients, and contaminants, in accordance with the criteria established under the Water Framework Directive. This information enables port operators and coastal industries to make data-driven decisions aimed at optimizing environmental management and reducing their impact on the marine environment.
The node inaugurated in Alicante is the first of a network of more than 30 ports and marinas which, starting in the Mediterranean, will initially expand into the Atlantic and subsequently to other regions, advancing towards a smart ports model that integrates real-time environmental data into daily port operations.
This first deployment has been implemented with the participation of The Ocean Race, a global reference in offshore sailing and environmental commitment, which has integrated POSINODE within its port facilities as part of its active commitment to innovation in support of marine sustainability. The Port Authority of Alicante has provided institutional support for the installation, facilitating the deployment of this technology within the coastal environment.
“The ocean absorbs 30% of the CO₂ we emit, and it is urgent to develop technologies capable of monitoring its condition in real time. Our climate infrastructure supports coastal industries in this regard, enabling them to optimize their environmental management and contribute to a sustainable blue economy,”

The inauguration of the first operational POSINODE node takes place within the framework of the Steering Committee meeting of the WestMED Initiative, held in Alicante on 9 and 10 June under the co-presidency of Spain and Tunisia. WestMED brings together ten countries of the Western Mediterranean – Portugal, France, Italy, Malta, and Spain on the northern shore, and Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, and Mauritania on the southern shore – with the shared objective of promoting a sustainable blue economy throughout the region.
The meeting gathers national blue economy representatives from all member countries, making Alicante the venue for a high-level discussion on the future of the sea and the industries that depend on it. In this context, POSINODE is presented as a practical technological tool supporting this shared vision, expanding from the Mediterranean to other regions.
