Banlastic: An initiative in Egypt to raise awareness of the risks of single-use plastics to the environment and commit to making the world greener and more sustainable – The city of Alexandria, nicknamed The Pearl of the Mediterranean Sea, is a world where diverse cultures and many styles of fun mix to provide tourism visitors in Alexandria with the greatest pleasure.
Alexandria, located on the Mediterranean coast northwest of the Nile Delta, with a population of 4,400,000, stands out as the second largest city in Egypt in terms of population and as one of the most important tourist destinations in Egypt, thanks to the amazing diversity it provides through tourist attractions, wonderful parks, various entertainment venues, picturesque beaches, along with distinctive traditional markets.
But despite its beauty, you will feel frustrated and angry because of the piles of plastic waste on the streets and in areas of natural beauty where walking on its streets can turn into a trip full of all kinds of waste. Your eyes can’t ignore the huge number of plastic bags, bottles, cans of soft drinks, candy wrappers where plastic items are randomly scattered to eventually find them on your plates.
In the midst of darkness , Banlastic reduce the negative effects of plastic
Banlastic initiative , A youth initiative born in the city of Alexandria, the Mediterranean bride, and its name is divided into two parts, the first is “PAN”, which is a foreign verb in the sense of Prohibiting, and the other is a syllable of the word “Plastic” and by combining the two words, the meaning becomes “preventing the use of plastics”, especially single-use plastics that cause great harm to the environment.
As residents of Alexandria, a bustling coastal city that relies heavily on tourism, Ahmed Yassin and Manar Ramadan witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of plastic pollution on their local environment. From the garbage on the beaches to the plastic waste clogging the streets, they knew they had to act on this. Plastic waste is of great concern in the city, because it not only harms the environment, but also poses a danger to wildlife and human health. Plastic bags, bottles and other single-use plastic items are usually found in garbage on the streets, parks and on beaches. This not only affects the aesthetic appearance of the city, but also contributes to the clogging of drainage systems and pollution of the Mediterranean Sea. The problem is exacerbated by the lack of proper waste management infrastructure and a lack of public awareness about the negative impact of plastic waste.
They started working on developing alternative products that can replace single-use plastics, offering training courses and workshops to educate the community about the harms of plastic pollution, and organizing environmental events that raise awareness of this problem.
The work carried out by Banlastic is an excellent example of how a small group of motivated individuals can make a big impact. By developing practical solutions, educating the community, and raising awareness of the harms of plastic pollution, they are working to create a more sustainable future for all of us.
