This extraordinary interaction between desert, ocean, wetlands, and shallow marine habitats creates one of the most productive and biologically significant coastal areas in the Eastern Atlantic Flyway. The park is internationally recognized as one of the world’s most important sanctuaries for migratory birds, hosting more than two million waterbirds every year arriving from northern Europe, Greenland, and Siberia.
Flamingos, pelicans, terns, sandpipers, and numerous pelagic and coastal species depend on the Banc d’Arguin ecosystem during crucial stages of their migration cycles. Scientific studies estimate that more than half of the bird species associated with the park are highly dependent on its marine and coastal habitats for survival and reproduction.
The presence of birds is perhaps the most visible indicator of the park’s extraordinary biodiversity. Recent international censuses recorded more than 1.7 million waterbirds during winter counts, with shorebirds representing over 90% of all individuals observed. Two endemic subspecies, the Banc d’Arguin spoonbill and the pale heron, further underline the uniqueness of this ecosystem, which serves as a critical stopover and wintering ground along one of the world’s most important migratory routes.

The ecological engine of Northwest Africa
What makes this ecosystem exceptional is precisely the environmental interaction between the desert and the ocean.
The coastal Sahara is not simply an arid backdrop. Wind-driven desert sediments, coastal dunes, nutrient-rich Atlantic upwelling and extensive seagrass beds combine to generate a highly productive marine environment. Researchers describe the area as a globally significant ecological interface where desert processes directly contribute to marine productivity and biodiversity.
The Atlantic coastal desert stretching across Mauritania and Western Sahara also plays a climatic role. The interaction between the cold Canary Current and the desert atmosphere generates fog, humidity regulation, and unique environmental conditions capable of sustaining both marine and terrestrial biodiversity despite extremely low rainfall.
Within this environmental mosaic, the shallow waters of Banc d’Arguin function as a nursery for fish, shellfish, and marine species essential to the regional fisheries economy. Seagrass ecosystems, mudflats, and coastal lagoons provide feeding and reproductive grounds for fish populations that support both biodiversity and local livelihoods.
The ecological importance of Banc d’Arguin extends well beyond its boundaries. Studies estimate that the park contributes approximately €78 million annually to Mauritania’s fisheries economy through its role as a breeding and nursery ground. Around 80% of the shrimp harvested in Mauritanian waters spend their juvenile stage inside the protected ecosystem. Species of major commercial value, including meagre and yellow mullet, also depend on the park during critical phases of their life cycles.
Biodiversity beyond birds
The park hosts an exceptional diversity of marine and terrestrial species. More than 200 species of fish, crustaceans, and molluscs have been recorded within its waters, together with six species of marine turtles, several dolphin species, and rare terrestrial fauna, including the last significant population of Dorcas gazelles in Mauritania.
The area also contains the northernmost white mangroves of West Africa and extensive seagrass meadows that form the ecological foundation of the entire system. These habitats support complex food webs and provide shelter for juvenile fish populations that later replenish fisheries throughout Mauritania’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
Particularly significant is the Cap Blanc satellite reserve, managed by the park south of Nouadhibou. This site hosts the world’s largest colony of Mediterranean monk seals, one of the most endangered marine mammals on the planet. More than 350 individuals have recently been recorded, representing over half of the global population of the species.

The Imraguen: custodians of a living heritage
The artisanal fishing communities living inside and around the park, particularly the Imraguen fishers, remain one of the most remarkable examples of traditional low-impact fisheries management in Africa. Their fishing practices are deeply connected to seasonal ecological rhythms and represent an important cultural heritage linked to sustainability and marine stewardship.
Approximately 1,200 Imraguen fishers live in a network of small coastal villages scattered along the park’s shoreline. For generations, their livelihoods have depended on maintaining a delicate balance between resource use and environmental conservation.
The relationship between conservation and local communities is one of the most distinctive features of Banc d’Arguin. Since the mid-1990s, the park has progressively developed participatory governance mechanisms that involve local fishers in consultation and co-management processes. Village representatives, fishing operators and park authorities regularly engage through local committees designed to strengthen dialogue, conflict resolution and shared responsibility for natural resource management.
In a region increasingly influenced by industrial fishing dynamics, the role of artisanal fisheries becomes even more strategic. These communities preserve ecological knowledge developed across generations while maintaining relatively selective and low-pressure fishing systems compared to industrial extraction models.
Surveillance and co-management as conservation tools
Effective protection of such a vast marine protected area requires continuous monitoring. Covering approximately 12,000 square kilometres, including more than 6,000 square kilometres of marine habitats, Banc d’Arguin has developed one of the most advanced participatory surveillance systems in West Africa.
The surveillance network combines park authorities, the Mauritanian Coast Guard and local communities through a system of patrol vessels, radar stations and coastal monitoring posts. In recent years, local fishers have become increasingly involved in surveillance activities through specially equipped boats carrying GPS systems, radios, and satellite communication devices.
This participatory approach has proven highly effective in identifying illegal fishing activities and improving enforcement operations. The model is now widely regarded as a best practice at the regional level and has inspired exchanges with other marine protected areas across West Africa.

Climate resilience and blue carbon
The broader Atlantic corridor surrounding Banc d’Arguin is evolving rapidly. The expansion of industrial fisheries infrastructure in Northwest Africa, including the growing strategic relevance of Dakhla as a major fishing hub, highlights the importance of strengthening regional dialogue on marine conservation, fisheries monitoring and ecosystem protection.
Future cooperation frameworks between Atlantic coastal countries, including potential initiatives involving Mauritania and Morocco, could contribute to improving scientific collaboration, fisheries surveillance, and shared environmental management across this interconnected marine corridor.
Recent scientific research has also revealed another critical dimension of the park’s global importance. Banc d’Arguin’s extensive seagrass meadows are among the most efficient natural carbon sinks on Earth. Some areas are estimated to store up to 83,000 tonnes of carbon per square kilometre, primarily within marine sediments accumulated over centuries. This storage capacity exceeds that of many tropical forest ecosystems and positions the park as a significant contributor to climate change mitigation.
A living laboratory for the future
As climate change intensifies marine heatwaves, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem stress across the Atlantic basin, Banc d’Arguin increasingly represents more than a protected area. It stands as a living laboratory demonstrating how desert ecosystems, ocean productivity, migratory species, and artisanal fisheries remain deeply interconnected.
Protecting this balance is not only an environmental priority. It is also a strategic investment in the future resilience of coastal ecosystems, sustainable fisheries, and the wider blue economy of Northwest Africa.
The experience of Banc d’Arguin demonstrates that conservation, community participation, and sustainable fisheries management can coexist within a single governance framework. At a time when marine resources are under growing pressure worldwide, this unique Mauritanian ecosystem offers valuable lessons for the future of coastal resilience and the blue economy.
