Tilapia welfare: FAI and Cairo University partnership – Aquaculture is a strategic sector for Egypt, one of the world’s largest producers of tilapia. In this context, the recent partnership between FAI (Fish Welfare Initiative) and Cairo University is a significant step towards promoting sustainable practices and optimising fish welfare. This ambitious project also involves Ethical Seafood Research (ESR), the Egyptian Central Laboratory for Aquaculture Research (CLAR), Aquavet Egypt and Kafr El Sheikh University, consolidating a collaborative network of academics and industry experts.

The partnership aims to transform the way tilapia is farmed, promoting ethical and sustainable standards that ensure both the health of the animals and the quality of the protein produced. Through this initiative, veterinarians, students and farmers will be trained in innovative practices to improve health and disease management while contributing to the protection of ecosystems.

Focus on welfare for sustainable production

The importance of prioritising fish welfare is at the heart of this initiative. The proposed new practices not only aim to improve the living conditions of tilapia, but also to ensure greater sustainability of aquaculture activities. At a time when demand for fish continues to grow globally, this approach is key to meeting market demands without compromising ecosystem health.

The partnership aims to develop a customised fish welfare model adapted to the specific conditions in Egypt. This is particularly relevant given the country’s role as a leader in aquaculture, which now has the opportunity to position itself as a global benchmark for ethical and sustainable practices.

Benefits for the industry and the environment

Besides improving the quality of life of farmed animals, collaboration between academia and industry is bound to bring significant economic benefits. More effective fish health and disease management, coupled with targeted training for future veterinarians and breeders, will increase farm productivity and profitability. These improvements will have a direct impact on food security and the national economy, making the Egyptian fish sector more competitive in the global market.

Towards ethical and innovative aquaculture

The collaboration between FAI, Cairo University and the other partners involved marks a turning point in fish welfare management in Egypt. Thanks to an integrated approach combining scientific knowledge, technological innovation and practical training, the country is poised to lead a new era for sustainable aquaculture. This project is not only a step forward for tilapia welfare, but also an example of how the synergy between research and industry can transform entire production sectors.
