Fish With A Story by ABALOBI Pioneering sustainable fisheries with community-led technologies

Fish With A Story by ABALOBI: Pioneering sustainable fisheries with community-led technologies – Fish With A Story – by ABALOBI – is fully traceable seafood harvested by small-scale fishers using low-impact fishing methods. This ethical seafood is ecologically responsible and socially fair.

Through Fish With A Story, the conscious consumer can partner with small-scale fishing communities on their journey to sustainability – to reimagine a more responsible (sea)food system.
ABALOBI is a hybrid social enterprise based in South Africa, founded by diverse team of scientists, small-scale fishers, fisheries experts, community engagement practitioners, developers, environmental anthropologists, seafood transformation experts, food systems advisors and social change innovators.

ABALOBI builds sustainable small-scale fishing communities using world-first data technologies. Its fisher-led approach creates inclusive, community-led technologies, supporting ecological, economic, and social sustainability in fisheries. Collaborating with coastal communities, the company develops catch data and traceability technology, empowering fishermen to build sustainable livelihoods and advance fisheries rebuilding. The innovative enterprise reimagines seafood systems through meaningful partnerships, ensuring inclusivity and impactful change.
This South African start up traces every fish from sea to plate.

Abalobi creates apps for small-scale fishers. It aims to improve fishers’ income and their access to buyers while promoting sustainable marine management. It allows users to see where seafood is coming from and Abalobi’s apps provide fishers with digital identity. They can protect their data, log their expenses and keep a record of their catches which means every fish can be traced from sea to plate.
Furthermore, fishers can also sell their catch directly to local restaurants and consumers so they can get a fairs price for their fish while buyers can access the full story behind the fish and read about fishers’ efforts toward rebuilding their fisheries. Small scale fisheries in South Africa have historically been underserved, poor literacy and the dominance of larger fishers has hampered their livelihoods. Abalobi’s technology can help to overcome these barriers improving lives and livelihoods while protecting the resources on which these fishers depend.
