African Union Unveils 10-Year Plan to Combat Desertification and Enhance Landscape Resilience

A key aspect of the new strategy involves exploring innovative funding options and incentives. These are focused on land-based restoration value chains, which are crucial for financing activities that aim to prevent land degradation and reclaim already degraded areas. This approach not only addresses environmental concerns but also supports economic development through sustainable land management.

African Union Unveils 10-Year Plan to Combat Desertification and Enhance Landscape Resilience

African Union Unveils 10-Year Plan to Combat Desertification and Enhance Landscape Resilience – In a significant move to address the escalating issue of desertification, the African Union (AU) has recently unveiled a comprehensive 10-year strategy. This initiative aims to rejuvenate and protect Africa’s drylands through the Great Green Wall Initiative, presenting a unified approach to landscape restoration and community resilience across the continent.

Strategy Overview

Announced in Nairobi, Kenya by Josefa Leonel Correia Sacko, the AU Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment, this strategy is designed to enhance coordinated efforts across 36 African countries. It provides a structured roadmap to mitigate the growing threat of desertification, promoting sustainable environmental practices and land restoration.

Funding and Incentives

A key aspect of the new strategy involves exploring innovative funding options and incentives. These are focused on land-based restoration value chains, which are crucial for financing activities that aim to prevent land degradation and reclaim already degraded areas. This approach not only addresses environmental concerns but also supports economic development through sustainable land management.

Collaborative Efforts and International Support

The announcement was made during the second Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit, a gathering that attracted over 4,000 participants, including scientists and international donors. This summit served as a platform to foster important discussions on enhancing soil productivity, which is essential for combating desertification.

Alignment with Global Climate Goals

According to Estherine Lisinge-Fotabong, Director of Program Innovation and Planning at the African Union Development Agency, the strategy is in alignment with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. This ensures that the AU’s efforts are part of a global framework to tackle climate change challenges.

Focus on Climate-Smart Practices

The AU strategy emphasizes the adoption of climate-smart agriculture and agroforestry practices. These methods are pivotal in managing landscapes effectively and combating desertification, thus ensuring the long-term sustainability and resilience of Africa’s diverse ecosystems.

Conclusion

The African Union’s new strategy against desertification represents a crucial step towards sustainable development and environmental protection in Africa. By promoting collaborative and integrated approaches, it aims to restore landscapes, enhance soil health, and build resilient communities, ensuring a greener future for the continent.
