Innovative indoor shrimp farm in Germany
Europe is gearing up to host the largest and most modern indoor shrimp farm, with Germany preparing to launch an extraordinary initiative. Shrimp farming start-up Aquapurna has partnered with German chemical company K+S to realise this ambitious project in Sigmundshall, near Hanover.
The former mining site of K+S, previously used for the production of potassium chloride, will be transformed into an innovative farm. K+S, one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of chemical fertiliser ingredients, will invest millions of euros in the project.
Aquapurna, which has already successfully introduced shrimps to the market under the brand name ‘Gamba Zamba’, is receiving further investment from private supporters to complete the project. The start-up has conducted over four years of research and development at the Sigmundshall site, implementing a vertically integrated larviculture system.
The new farm, which will produce 800 tonnes of shrimps per year, will adopt a sustainable and technologically advanced approach. Modern recirculation technology will be used to reuse 98 per cent of the growing water, while the roofs of the sheds will be equipped with solar panels to generate electricity.
The project will be developed in three phases, with the construction of the first hall and related infrastructure planned for 2024-2025. This innovative plant not only promises to be a sustainable business model, but will also contribute to the creation of 50 local jobs.
