Togo. More than 1,5 million USD to develop fishing and aquaculture in 2023

Togo. More than 1.5 million USD to develop fishing and aquaculture in 2023 – In Togo, the State plans to disburse 1.1 billion FCFA (more than 1.5 million USD) this year 2023, for the benefit of fisheries and aquaculture, that is to say nearly 50% of the budget of the ministry of maritime economy which is established at 2.3 billion FCFA.

With these projected resources, the “Development of Aquaculture in Togo” (PDAT) project, which is in its pilot phase on Lake Nangbeto, should continue.

In concrete terms, the ministry headed by Edem Kokou Tengue will provide technical support to fish farmers with the installation of floating cages, fry and the organisation of training sessions on aquaculture techniques.

The fishing industry, particularly those operating in the fishing port of Lomé, should also benefit from various forms of support that will enable them to increase fish production. “In reference to the 2022-2025 roadmap, covering the needs of fisheries remains a priority. We are working to create the conditions to develop national production in order to satisfy local demand,” Minister Edem Tengue said recently.

It should be noted that the fisheries sector is growing rapidly in Togo. Aquaculture production has risen from 730 t in 2020 to 1151 t in 2022, according to the ministry in charge of fisheries. At the same time, 11,567 t of fish are caught through artisanal maritime fishing, 117 t by industrial fishing and 6,300 t taken from inland waters.
