Morocco: an $11 million marine fish farm to be installed in Tangier – In Morocco, aquaculture is one of the components of the fisheries sector that can help reduce the pressure on fish resources. The Kingdom of Morocco has a huge potential for both natural areas for installations and manpower.

In Morocco, the National Agency for the Development of Aquaculture (ANDA) is planning to set up a marine fish farm in the Tangier region in collaboration with the Israeli company Agrigo, which specialises in the development and launch of turnkey agricultural complexes.

The agreement ratifying the implementation of the project was initialled during the 6th edition of the International Halieutis Exhibition which was held from 1 to 5 February in the city of Agadir. With a total cost of 10 million euros ($11 million), the construction of the new infrastructure is scheduled to start next April.

“The majority of the farms that Morocco has so far, which are close to the coast, are more shellfish farms than fish farms,” explains Houcine Nibani, head of the North Africa region of the Conservation Coach Network (CCNet).

In Morocco, fisheries production is around 1.4 million tonnes per year, while marine aquaculture totals only 1,300 tonnes according to FAO data. In the Kingdom of Morocco, this sub-sector currently has 60 active farms and employs around 600 people.
