Crisis in the French fisheries sector

Crisis in the French fishing sector – Brexit and the situation in Ukraine have significantly impacted the French fishing sector, mainly due to the rising cost of fuel.

The association Régions de France, raising the issue, urges the state to intensify its efforts to support the sector during this energy transition.

Although the state has already compensated for part of the fuel costs, Régions de France believes that this compensation could be more effective if it is specifically targeted at those who need it most and, above all, should not be interrupted. However, the regions do not have the financial resources or borrowing capacity of the state, and the government is further reducing their funding in the Finance Act 2024.

According to the association, it would be counterproductive to transfer resources from one region to another, and in a recent press release it points out that the state still has a Brexit adjustment reserve of EUR 736 million until the end of the year, funds that could be valuable for fishermen. There is still time to mobilise them to support the sector.

Régions de France

An influential network of top-level experts, Régions de France builds, nurtures, disseminates and enriches the regional political project. Transpartisan, this project is that of a truly decentralised France at the service of our fellow citizens. It covers all regional policies in their three dimensions.
Régions de France acts at national and European level to convince institutions and, above all, public opinion, of the benefits of decentralisation. At the service of regional elected officials, the network gathers the experiences of the regions, collects and analyses data, builds arguments and brings advocacy to the right level.
