Morocco Fès to be the site of a new $4.6 million wholesale fish market

Morocco: Fès to be the site of a new $4.6 million wholesale fish market – Morocco is the second largest supplier of fish in Africa after Egypt, and the continent’s leading exporter of fish products. In Morocco, the fishing sector still contributes less than 2% of the value added to the national economy.

In Morocco, a financing agreement worth 45 million dirhams ($4.6 million) was signed on 26 July between the Ministry of Agriculture, the administration of the commune of Fès and the administration of the Fès-Meknès region for the construction of a new wholesale fish market in the city of Fès.

According to information relayed by the local daily Media24, the Office national des pêches (ONP) has been appointed to manage the project. The initiative is part of the government’s strategy to modernise the marketing channels for agricultural and fishery products.

The project is intended to ensure the permanent availability of fish, but also to contribute to increasing consumption in the Fès-Meknès region through the installation of an appropriate distribution platform meeting quality standards.

“This infrastructure will have a space for displaying and selling fish products, an identification lock and a shipping lock for the products, cold installations, a cold room, community premises, a weighbridge, administrative and technical premises, car parks and outdoor facilities”, reports the same source.

According to official figures, fish consumption in Morocco averages 13.6 kg per capita per year. This is still below the world average of around 21 kg.
