Inside Raie Manta Jijel Marine Adventures and Conservation

Marine associations play an important role in protecting coastal ecosystems and raising awareness about the sea as a natural, recreational, and scientific resource. One such organization, Raya Manta Jijel, is a local group active along the Mediterranean coast in Jijel, Algeria. It combines underwater activities, training, and environmental work to promote a better understanding of the marine environment.

A Local Group with a Clear Mission

Raya Manta Jijel was founded on November 18, 2008, as a nonprofit association serving the Jijel province. Its base is at the Grand Lighthouse in Jijel, with 19 active volunteers. The association is part of the Algerian Federation for Rescue, First Aid, and Underwater Activities (FASSAS) and is led by Mr. Fates Yassine.

The group’s main goal is to increase knowledge about the underwater world, protect marine life, and encourage respect for the sea through sports, scientific activities, and cultural programs connected to the ocean.

Active Work in the Field

Raya Manta Jijel is involved in a variety of activities related to the marine environment. These include scuba diving, fin swimming, rescue and first aid training, underwater filming, and setting up underwater trails. They also promote windsurfing and organize environmental projects. The group believes that direct contact with the sea is the best way to learn and understand the importance of protecting coastal ecosystems.

Key Achievements

One of the association’s important achievements was hosting Algeria’s first national underwater orienteering championship, called the “Treasure Hunt.” This event took place four times, including an international edition in 2018.

The association also created the first underwater trail in North Africa, located in the Gulf of the Grand Lighthouse. This trail was developed with the support of Taza National Park and the Jijel Municipality and aims to educate visitors about the marine environment.

In 2016, Raya Manta Jijel organized an international training course on creating and managing underwater trails, working together with Taza National Park and the Tunisian PINNA Association. The group also achieved national success in fin swimming in 2018 and organized Algeria’s first underwater photography festival in Jijel.

A Valuable Example

Raya Manta Jijel shows how a local association can help protect the marine environment through a combination of sports, training, and hands-on work. Their efforts help increase knowledge of the sea, promote responsible behavior toward the environment, and contribute to sustainable coastal management.

In a region where the marine ecosystem faces growing challenges, initiatives like Raya Manta Jijel are essential in encouraging people to care for and protect the sea.

Raya Manta Jijel shows how local effort can protect and care for the marine environment. By combining sports, education, and hands-on activities, the association helps people understand the sea and why it needs to be respected. Their work supports both the health of coastal ecosystems and the community’s connection to the Mediterranean, helping to preserve it for future generations.
