Aquaculture. Innovative electric barrier against jellyfish

Aquaculture. Innovative electrical barrier against jellyfish – Norwegian aquaculture technology company Harbor has achieved a significant milestone in the protection of farmed salmon by implementing an innovative technological solution to mitigate the damage caused by pearlside jellyfish. After rigorous testing, the electric barrier technology developed by Harbor proved effective in neutralising these jellyfish, reducing the risk to salmon and economic losses to farmers.

The flagship solution, called Harbor Fence, is an electric barrier that has already been successfully used to neutralise sea lice larvae, a major threat to fish health in fish farms. Thanks to recent developments, the same technology is now able to trigger the release of venom in pearlside jellyfish through a controlled electric shock, rendering them harmless for several days. This innovative approach allows jellyfish to pass through farms without harming the fish, drastically reducing mortality rates.

Every year, millions of farmed salmon are lost to pearlside jellyfish, resulting in economic damage and compromised animal welfare. Harbor’s technology therefore represents a breakthrough for the aquaculture industry, offering a practical and scalable solution to a long-standing problem.

The effectiveness of the Harbor Fence has generated considerable interest in the industry, leading to a share issue that has been a success beyond expectations, with 30% more subscriptions than expected. This allowed the company to plan an increase in production to meet the growing demand from salmon farmers.

The ability to improve fish health and reduce losses has made this technology one of the most promising innovations in modern aquaculture. With production set to increase, Harbor aims to consolidate its position as a technology leader, contributing to a more sustainable future for the fishing industry.
