Empowering African Journalists to Report on Climate Change in Africa 2024

Empowering African Journalists to Report on Climate Change in Africa 2024 – In response to the urgent need for reliable climate change information across Africa, Dialogue Earth, in collaboration with partners, experts, and seasoned African journalists, has developed a free, six-part course on “Reporting Climate Change in Africa.” This innovative program aims to equip young and upcoming African journalists with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively cover the climate crisis impacting the continent.

Africa, home to 1.2 billion people, is at the forefront of the global climate emergency, facing a range of challenges from rising temperatures and extreme weather events to droughts and food insecurity. Effective and informed reporting on these critical issues is crucial for raising awareness, driving policy changes, and empowering communities to adapt and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

The Reporting Climate Change in Africa project aims to help build the field of climate journalism in Africa. This supports the wider development of journalism and environmental civil society on the continent and helps to create opportunities for media professionals, organizations, and NGOs that demand a greater voice in the public sphere. The project represents a ground-breaking collaboration between four global organizations; Dialogue Earth, Wits Africa-China Reporting Project, Development Reimagined, and The China Global South Project, under the funding framework of the Africa Climate Foundation (ACF).

The course covers a comprehensive range of topics, including:

Module 1: Introduction to climate change
Provides a foundational understanding of climate change issues.

Module 2: Reporting climate change for beginners
Equips you with reporting skills to communicate climate change effectively.

Module 3: Climate change and Africa: The big picture
Focuses on the impacts of climate change – geophysical, social, economic – on Africa.

Module 4: Tailoring reporting to African audiences
Offers guidance on how to shape climate-change reporting for African contexts and audiences.

Module 5: Africa’s climate solutions
Explores potential solutions and a “just transition” for Africa in the face of climate change.

Module 6: Your African climate intervention
Looks at how African journalists can broaden the impact of their climate reporting.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate, and for a limited time, have the opportunity to apply for a reporting grant of up to $1,500. This grant will enable them to undertake in-depth climate change reporting projects, further honing their skills and contributing to the crucial dialogue on the climate crisis in Africa.

“This course is a game-changer for African journalists who are passionate about climate change reporting,”

said Aisha Muhammed, a seasoned Kenyan journalist and course advisor.

“It provides the tools and resources necessary to elevate the quality and reach of climate journalism across the continent, empowering a new generation of climate storytellers.”

The investing in the capacity of African journalists, Dialogue Earth aims to amplify local voices, foster knowledge-sharing, and inspire collaborative efforts to address the climate challenges faced by communities across the African continent.

To access the free six-part course and apply for the reporting grant, interested participants can fill out the registration form on the Dialogue Earth website.
