New aquaculture projects to boost Oman’s fisheries sector – In its ongoing efforts to promote the development of the fisheries sector, Oman’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) recently announced ambitious plans to implement five new aquaculture projects within the current year.
The upcoming 2024 projects include the second phase of an abalone aquaculture project in Mirbat, Dhofar governorate, and a shrimp enterprise in Jaalan Bani Bu Ali, southern Sharqiyah, identified as two of the most significant projects.
Further initiatives will come to life in Barka, southern Batinah, along with Marine Fin Fish projects in Khasab (Musandam governorate) and Seeb (Muscat governorate).
As pointed out by Issa Mohammed al Farsi, director of the fish farming development department at MAFWR, these projects are aimed at promoting new sources of income for local communities. Fasro also points out how shrimp farms, in particular, have facilitated the direct marketing of products by local citizens and owners of small and medium-sized enterprises.
These initiatives have opened up new business opportunities and supported local economies, with an economic impact that goes beyond the traditional fishing sector.
Looking to the future, the MAFWR is committed to further enhancing the added value of domestic aquaculture products, enriching the local market with a wide range of high quality seafood products and thus consolidating Oman’s position in the global aquaculture context.
