From Local Activist to International Recognition: The Inspiring Journey of Besjana Guri
In a historic milestone for environmental conservation in Albania and across Europe, Besjana Guri, a passionate environmental advocate from Albania, has been awarded the Goldman Environmental Prize—widely known as the “Green Nobel”—for her tireless efforts to protect the Vjosa River, one of the continent’s last wild and free-flowing waterways.
Building a Movement
Long before gaining international recognition, Guri was a dedicated local activist driven by a deep love for Albania’s wilderness and a determination to defend its natural heritage. In 2014, she co-founded EcoAlbania, an environmental organization that became a cornerstone of the Save the Blue Heart of Europe campaign. Working closely with local communities, scientists, and international partners such as Euronatur and RiverWatch, Guri helped transform grassroots activism into a powerful movement for river conservation.
Their collective persistence led to a monumental achievement. In March 2023, the Albanian government declared the Vjosa River a Wild River National Park—the first of its kind in Europe. This landmark designation safeguards over 400 kilometers of the river and its tributaries, protecting a unique ecosystem that supports more than 1,175 species, including endangered eels, vultures, and otters.
Often referred to as “The Blue Heart of Europe,” the Vjosa River is not just a biodiversity hotspot—it is a living symbol of Albania’s natural and cultural identity. For local communities, its waters represent both a source of livelihood and a deep connection to their heritage.
A New Chapter: Founding LUMI
In July 2025, shortly after receiving the Goldman Prize, Guri embarked on a new chapter in her journey by founding LUMI, an organization dedicated to the protection and sustainable management of Albania’s natural ecosystems. Through LUMI, she continues to champion environmental justice, bridging the gap between science, policy, and community action.
LUMI’s mission extends beyond advocacy—it focuses on implementing innovative conservation projects, empowering local communities, and ensuring that sustainable practices become the foundation for Albania’s future. Under Guri’s leadership, the organization is already building partnerships with policymakers and international networks to amplify local voices and create long-term environmental impact.
A Legacy of Grassroots Leadership
Besjana Guri’s story exemplifies how grassroots activism, strategic collaboration, and unwavering commitment can drive systemic change. Her leadership transformed a local conservation struggle into a globally recognized victory for nature.
While the declaration of the Vjosa River National Park marked a major triumph, Guri remains steadfast in her mission to ensure the river’s long-term protection. Through LUMI, she continues to inspire others to act—demonstrating that determined individuals, working hand in hand with their communities, can protect the planet’s most precious ecosystems.
From a passionate local advocate to a recipient of one of the world’s most prestigious environmental awards, Besjana Guri’s journey stands as a beacon of hope—a reminder that when people unite for a cause, even the wildest dreams for a wilder river can come true.
