From fish waste high value products – The fish industry is experiencing a sustainable revolution, thanks to a pioneering initiative by Sealord, supported by the New Zealand government. The ‘Fish Waste Optimisation’ programme is a significant step towards valorising fish waste and turning it into high-value consumer products. With a government contribution of more than USD 2 million out of a total of USD 5.29 million, this ambitious project promises to redefine the concept of sustainability in the seafood sector.

Sealord, one of the leaders in New Zealand’s fishing industry, has historically used most of its fish waste to produce fishmeal, a product with low commercial value. However, thanks to a programme supported by the Ministry of Primary Industries’ Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures fund, the company is developing new solutions to maximise the potential of this waste, turning it into high-value products.

The project comprises several phases, ranging from consumer research to the selection of third-party producers, from the development of innovative formulations to the creation of sustainable packaging. In addition, new distribution options and export markets will be explored to ensure the commercial success of the new products.

The first tangible result of this effort will be a range of organic garden fertilisers, which could be a viable alternative to synthetic fertilisers used in agriculture, viticulture and horticulture. Sealord is also working on the development of high-quality ingredients for the pet food industry, with the long-term goal of launching its own product line for this fast-growing market segment.

This project will not only help double the value of New Zealand’s fish exports, but will also reinforce the government’s strategy for more sustainable aquaculture. Sealord’s initiative responds to a growing global demand for eco-friendly products and is a virtuous example of how innovation can generate new revenue streams while contributing to environmental protection.
