Aquaculture Morocco acquires a marine fish hatchery

Aquaculture: Morocco acquires a marine fish hatchery – The Minister of Agriculture, Sea Fisheries, Rural Development and Water and Forests, Mr Mohammed Sadiki, presided over the ceremony to launch construction work on the marine fish hatchery on Tuesday 18 July in the commune of Gueznaya, in the Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceima region.

The ceremony took place in the presence of local authorities, government representatives and private players active in the aquaculture sector.

Covering an area of 2.28 hectares, this structuring project for the national aquaculture sector involves an investment of 120 million dirhams, to provide the upstream end of the value chain with a source of supply of fry. Fingerling production is seen as a key integration lever for securing the viability of aquaculture projects specialising in fish farming.

This is the first fish seed production project in Morocco for which the government is providing financial support in the form of an investment premium of 20 million dirhams for the acquisition of hatchery equipment.
This first marine hatchery in Morocco will produce up to 30 million top-quality local fry of sea bream, sea bass, meagre and other species of interest to national fish farms.

It should be emphasised that the sustainable development of the aquaculture sector at national level depends, among other things, on strengthening the whole ecosystem linked to this activity, particularly the availability and accessibility on the national market of the main inputs, in this case seed (fry) of a quality in line with international norms and standards, at a cost that allows aquaculture businesses to be competitive and sustainable.
