Global Blue Innovation Takes the Stage at MedBlueTech Summit 2025

Marine biotechnology, sustainable ports, and Euro-African cooperation will converge at the MedBlueTech Summit on November 26, bringing together scientists, public institution,s and innovators leading the transformation of the Blue Economy in the Mediterranean and beyond.

Alicante, 17th November. Held in Alicante, Spain, this international forum is supported by prominent organizations such as Mediterranean Algae, Bioval, Casa Mediterráneo, ImpulsAlicante, Think in Azul, the European project 2B-Blue, the Alicante Science Park, the Port Authority of Alicante, Alicante Port Innova, Spain’s Ministry of Science and Innovation, and the University of Murcia.

A Crossroad for Science, Industry, and Policy

The Summit will bring together institutional leaders, scientific experts, and pioneering companies to explore the future of marine innovation. Key speakers include:

  • Manuel Pleguezuelo, from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE), will open the event with a keynote on EU Blue Economy policies.
  • Javier Jerez, Head of Environment at the Alicante Port Authority, will share the port’s strategies for mitigating environmental impacts along the Mediterranean coast and leading the adoption of nature-based solutions in port ecosystems.
  • Yago Sierras, from Mediterranean Algae, will share the results of their innovative algae-based Bioremediation technology BIOREMED ALGAE®; Judit Jiménez Casero and Jesús Argente, from the University of Murcia; Emmanuel Rezzouk, from IFREMER (France); and Chrysa Efstratiou, from the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (Greece), will present applied research and emerging technologies in blue biotechnology.
  • Alejandra Abellán (University of Murcia) and Carlos Otero (external consultant) will introduce App Lonja 2.0, a digital platform designed to promote short supply chains and boost local fish consumption.
  • Rym Benzina, from La Saison Bleue (Tunisia), will share insights into initiatives for protecting and promoting a sustainable Blue Economy across the Tunisian coastline.

Transformative Lab: Blue Tech in Action

A highlight of the event is the Transformative Lab, powered by ThinkInAzul (Spain’s National Complementary R&D Program in Marine Sciences) and the EU-funded project 2B-Blue.

This space will showcase innovation cases such as:

  • Macroalgae-based bioremediation
  • Carbon footprint tokenisation
  • Marine digitalisation platforms
  • Nature-based tech solutions applied to ports, aquaculture, and coastal tourism

Euro–North African Cooperation & Blue Governance

The Summit will also host a high-level geopolitical dialogue on Blue Cooperation between Europe and North Africa, focusing on scientific and environmental partnerships with countries across the southern Mediterranean.

The day will close with a session on blue governance, featuring institutional representatives and maritime regulators.

Showcase & Live Technology Demo

Attendees will have access to a technology showcase featuring startups, companies, and research centers from the Valencia Region, promoting collaboration and product demonstrations in the blue-tech ecosystem.

One of the key moments of the Summit will be the live demonstration of BIOREMED ALGAE®, a nature-based technology developed by Mediterranean Algae for bioremediation in port environments.

This pilot, implemented at the Port of Alicante, achieved measurable environmental impact—treating over 4 million liters of seawater, reducing nitrates by 65%, phosphates by 55%, and capturing heavy metals. The demonstration will be part of the “Bioremediation & Ports” roundtable.

“MedBlueTech Summit is an opportunity to show how we can lead blue innovation from the Mediterranean. With technologies like BIOREMED ALGAE®, we prove it’s possible to denitrify and restore port waters while building a sustainable and resilient economy,” says Yago Sierras, CEO of Mediterranean Algae.
