Egypt Highlights Commitment to a Sustainable Blue Economy at the Third Africa Blue Summit in Tangier
The Third Africa Blue Summit concluded in Tangier, Morocco, on 9–10 October 2025, jointly organized by the Academy of the Kingdom of Morocco and the Blue Initiative. The event gathered political leaders, researchers, and economic actors from across Africa to discuss the continent’s maritime strategy and advance the vision for a sustainable blue economy.
The summit focused on the “Charter for a Sustainable Blue Africa”, which was first introduced at the United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice as one of the main commitments under the “Nice Marine Pledges.” The charter aims to transform Africa’s marine and coastal resources into a driver for sustainable development, innovation, and resilience—especially for coastal communities most affected by climate change.
Egypt’s Active Role in Promoting the Blue Economy
During the summit, Dr. Manal Awad emphasized Egypt’s strong commitment to advancing the blue economy, highlighting the coordination among various national ministries working on this critical agenda.
She affirmed that Egypt remains open to regional and international cooperation aimed at protecting the marine environment, supporting the sustainable use of ocean resources, and accelerating the transition toward a resilient blue economy.
Dr. Awad also stressed the importance of Egypt’s participation in the summit’s discussions leading to the Africa Blue Charter, a regional framework designed to strengthen cooperation in ocean protection, coastal resilience, and sustainable economic growth.
Showcasing Egypt’s National Efforts for Ocean Protection
Dr. Walaa Gad El-Karim, Director of the Central Unit of the “Decent Life” Initiative at Egypt’s Ministry of Local Development, presented Egypt’s national efforts to protect oceans and coasts.
He noted Egypt’s active participation in international and regional initiatives, recalling the country’s engagement at the One Ocean Summit held in France in 2022.
Dr. Gad El-Karim highlighted Egypt’s ongoing projects to protect the northern coastline using eco-friendly technologies and engaging local communities in implementing sustainable solutions.
He also mentioned that Egypt, in collaboration with the World Bank, is currently developing a comprehensive national strategy for the blue economy and improving monitoring mechanisms for marine environmental changes along the Mediterranean and Red Seas, as well as the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba.
Regional Integration and Future Outlook
Dr. Gad El-Karim underlined the need to ensure alignment between the outcomes of the Africa Blue Summit and the 24th Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea, which Egypt will host in December 2025.
This alignment will strengthen Egypt’s leadership in regional environmental and ocean governance efforts and reinforce its commitment to sustainable coastal and marine development
The Tangier summit underscored Africa’s determination to build a sustainable blue economy rooted in science, innovation, and regional cooperation.
Egypt’s active participation reaffirmed its position as a key regional player in ocean governance—working to safeguard marine ecosystems, empower coastal communities, and turn the “Blue Economy” into a pathway for sustainable development and climate resilience across the African continent.
