Mediterranean Algae: Unlocking the Blue Bioeconomy Potential of the Mediterranean

Mediterranean Algae: Unlocking the Blue Bioeconomy Potential of the Mediterranean _ On the southeastern coast of Spain, a promising startup is redefining how we see algae—not just as seaweed, but as a sustainable powerhouse for industry, ecology, and regional development. Mediterranean Algae, founded by four young scientists and entrepreneurs, is building a circular blue bioeconomy rooted in the Mediterranean’s natural richness.

“We were inspired by the untapped potential of the Mediterranean region for algae cultivation,” says Silvia Antón Sempere, the company’s COO. “Despite the region’s ideal conditions—abundant sunlight, biodiversity, and extensive coastline—algae remains underutilized. We aim to change that.”

Why Algae, Why Now? The Rise of Ulva Seaweed

Mediterranean Algae focuses on cultivating Ulva spp., commonly known as sea lettuce—a fast-growing, nutrient-rich macroalgae. Ulva is highly versatile, thrives in Mediterranean waters, and offers enormous potential across multiple industries, including cosmetics, agriculture, nutraceuticals, and more.

Currently, the company’s products are used in cosmetic formulations, valued for their antioxidant and moisturizing properties, and in biostimulants that improve crop resilience and reduce dependency on synthetic fertilizers. Food and nutraceutical applications are also under development.

Algae Cultivation as a Climate Solution

Algae farming is not only resource-efficient—requiring no freshwater or arable land—but also actively supports climate action. By capturing CO₂ and promoting marine biodiversity, Mediterranean Algae contributes to several UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 13: Climate Action
  • SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
  • SDG 14: Life Below Water

“Our operations aim to restore coastal ecosystems while creating green jobs,” says Antón Sempere.

Overcoming Challenges: Innovation in Algae Farming

Building an algae company comes with regulatory and technical challenges, especially regarding coastal permitting, water quality, and infrastructure. Mediterranean Algae responded with a hybrid cultivation model, combining onshore tank systems with sustainable sea-based farming. This ensures scalability, regulatory compliance, and minimal environmental impact.

Collaboration has also been key. The startup works closely with Spanish institutions such as CSIC, IEO, IMIDA, and the University of Alicante, engaging in joint R&D, innovative extraction methods, and pilot-scale production.

Expanding the Blue Bioeconomy: Global Vision

Initially focused on local and regional markets in Spain and Southern Europe, Mediterranean Algae is now targeting Northern Europe and Asia through distributor partnerships and participation in international trade missions.

Events like European Ocean Days and BlueInvest have boosted the company’s visibility, connecting it with the wider blue bioeconomy ecosystem for knowledge exchange, strategic growth, and networking.

The Future of Algae in Sustainable Industries

Antón Sempere believes algae will play a transformative role in sustainable industries.

“Algae can replace synthetic ingredients, valorize marine waste, and contribute to regenerative aquaculture. Its versatility makes it a pillar of future value chains.”

Startups like Mediterranean Algae bring innovation, agility, and connectivity to the Mediterranean blue economy, bridging science, industry, and policy.

Advice for Emerging Entrepreneurs:

“Understand both the science and the market. Build a strong, multidisciplinary team. Be patient—this sector takes time—but stay bold and visionary.”
