Blue  economy and gender equality: empowering women in fisheries and aquaculture

Algeria recently hosted a professional training organized by the Programme Économie Bleue in Algeria, aimed at practitioners from the fisheries and aquaculture sectors in the central region. The training focused on the integration of gender perspectives into daily professional practices, highlighting its importance for improving performance and governance within the sector.

Throughout the sessions, participants discussed how existing gender disparities in fisheries and aquaculture affect not only social dynamics but also the economic efficiency of the sector. Underutilizing women’s potential in areas such as quality control, marketing, or local innovation limits opportunities to enhance productivity and added value. Recent approaches show that empowering women and strengthening their participation can directly contribute to improved production, better governance, and progress toward sustainable development goals.

Building skills and strengthening inclusive governance

The training aimed to equip professionals with practical tools to analyze gender-related inequalities and integrate this dimension into sectoral policies and daily operations.

Participants explored methods for assessing disparities and proposing practical solutions that consider the needs of workers of all genders—whether in access to resources, work conditions, or participation in decision-making.

Aligned with the principles of the blue economy

This initiative is part of Algeria’s broader efforts to advance a sustainable blue economy based on the responsible and balanced use of marine resources. Promoting inclusiveness and equality is considered an essential component of this pathway, as it contributes to improving the resilience and long-term performance of marine and aquatic systems.

Toward  more resilient marine systems

The program supports the development of fisheries and aquaculture systems that are better prepared to adapt to current and emerging challenges. Integrating gender perspectives is increasingly viewed as a key element of modern governance, helping enhance overall efficiency within the sector while generating lasting value for local communities.
