The second edition of the GFCM forum on Fisheries Science in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea (Fish forum) 2024 – The second edition of the GFCM Forum on Fisheries Science in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea (Fish Forum) was held in Antalya, Turkey from February 19 to 23, 2024, this 2nd edition is hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Türkiye and the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

It is considered the largest scientific gathering dedicated to fisheries and related issues in the region and is an accredited activity in support of the United Nations Decade of Oceanography for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). This major event for the Mediterranean and Black Sea region will provide a unique platform for discussions on fisheries research, socio-economic sciences, and oceanography and represents one of the most important opportunities to exchange knowledge and experience on the main challenges affecting the fisheries sector in the region and to help formulate the most appropriate and effective policy responses with more than 400 participants from more than 40 countries.

This year, special attention was devoted to climate change and innovative technologies, with many workshops and discussions addressing issues such as small-scale fisheries, bycatch, shark and Sturgeon management and conservation, as well as selectivity and decarbonization.

Later this year, Fisheries stakeholders from all over the world will be invited to participate in the small-scale fisheries summit in Rome (5-7 July 2024). The Mediterranean-focused event will serve as a key moment to assess and evaluate the progress made in the implementation of the Regional Plan of Action for small-scale fisheries in the mid-term, providing a comprehensive overview of our current position in the advancement of sustainable small-scale fisheries within the region. These discussions will help to prioritize initiatives and integrate scientific information into decision-making processes, in anticipation of the next thirty-sixth session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries scheduled for 8-12 July 2024 in Rome.
