Artisanal fishing. Togo_ 6.6 million kg of fish caught in 2022, up 50%

Artisanal fishing. Togo: 6.6 million kg of fish caught in 2022 up 50% – In Togo, the artisanal fishing sector continues to ride on the good performance observed over the past two years. In 2022, the quantity of fish caught stood at 6,687,015 kg, the Ministry of Maritime Economy said in its annual report on the subject.

This is an increase of 50% compared to the previous year, during which 4,129,423 kg of fish were caught.

Several factors can explain this upturn in particular

The modernization of infrastructure with the opening of the new fishing port and its new fish market, the implementation of new working arrangements for fishermen and fishmongers, the arrival of new national and international fishermen leading to an increase in the number of canoes and naturally a greater quantity of fishery products brought back from sea trips.

Moreover, the department headed by Edem Tengue carried out various actions in 2022 to promote fishing and aquaculture in the country. The objective is above all to allow Togolese fishermen to make the most of their skills in order to have greater economic stability.

As a reminder, in Togo, fishing employs more than 20,000 people and contributes nearly 4.5% of GDP. New investments are also planned in the sector.
