Nairobi Summer School for climate justice – Climate change is one of the defining challenges of our time, requiring a global, unified effort to address its devastating impacts. It is in this crucial context that the Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice (NSSCJ) has emerged as a beacon of hope and empowerment. Launched in 2020, this esteemed program has already graduated over 1500 alumni who are now driving climate advocacy across Africa and beyond.
The recently concluded fourth cohort of the NSSCJ, held from June 24 to July 6, 2024, at Chuka University in Kenya, exemplified the school’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of climate leaders. The event was marked by the attendance of high-level dignitaries, government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and hundreds of youths from 87 countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, and America.
The curriculum of the NSSCJ was structured around seven distinct tracks, each addressing a critical aspect of climate justice:
TRACK 1 – Climate security (peace , security, and migration )
TRACK 2 – Climate change and water resources
TRACK 3 – Climate , gender, and social justice (women , youth , children , Vulnerable AND Marginalized Groups)
TRACK 4 – Climate Justice and Faith
TRACK 5 – Human and environmental Rights
TRACK 6 – Agriculture and Food Systems
TRACK 7 – Climate Change and Health
This diversity of modules ensured that the participants gained a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted nature of climate justice, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to tackle the challenge from various angles.
Dr. Mithika Mwenda, the Executive Director of the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance, underscored the timeliness of this gathering, stating that
“it is the perfect time for the youth to step forward and advocate for Climate Justice.”
This sentiment reflects the school’s unwavering belief in the transformative power of youth engagement.
The theme of the fourth cohort, “Igniting Youth Power for Enhanced Global Solidarity on Climate Justice,” underscores the NSSCJ’s mission to empower young climate advocates, activists, policymakers, and community leaders to champion the cause of climate justice. By providing a platform for learning, networking, and collaboration, the school is equipping its participants with the knowledge, skills, and connections necessary to drive meaningful change.
One of the highlights of the program was the special “Cultures Gala” event, where each country represented showcased its unique cultural heritage through music, dance, and other artistic expressions. This celebration of diversity served as a window into the rich tapestry that makes Africa such a vibrant and culturally-diverse continent.
The event also witnessed the launch of the 8th edition of the African climate change and environmental reporting Award 2024.
Speaking during the launch of the 8th edition of the African climate change and environmental reporting Award 2024 at the Chuka University, Dr. Mwenda urged the African media to report more on climate change, especially climate financing and climate justice as well as adaption financing.
The ACCER awards recognizes media practitioners who are using the power of imaginative story-telling to highlight the impact of climate change in Africa.
The finals of the awards will be held in Abidjan, Ivory Coast in September 2024.
