Libya-Italy 2024 Economic Forum in Tripoli

Libya-Italy 2024 Economic Forum in Tripoli – The Libya-Italy 2024 Economic Forum will be held in Tripoli on 29 October, an important event that aims to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in various economic and cultural sectors.

The recent visits of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to Tripoli confirm, if there was still a need, the role that Italy wants to play in the development process in the Maghreb area and specifically in Libya.

The topics will focus on development and collaboration in strategic productive sectors, specifically mining, olive oil production, fishing and aquaculture, scientific research and oil industries.

The General Authority for Fairs and the Italian Embassy in Tripoli, under the direction of the Office of the Prime Minister of the Libyan National Unity Government, are preparing the important event.

Fishing as a strategic sector will take on a prominent role during the forum and further demonstrates the will that both countries have to find solutions, which are certainly within reach, not only to put an end to years of misunderstandings that have sometimes led to diplomatic crises between the states, but which may prove to be conducive to reaching agreements for the exploitation of fishery resources in Libyan waters.

Updating the management plan of GSA 21 (areas bordering Libya) for this purpose will be necessary as it has not been for several years due to a lack of data, despite the fact that Libya is a member of the GFCM (General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean), a body that has set up the very geographical sub-areas (GSAs) in which compliance with the application of fishing effort over the long term without affecting the consistency and regeneration capacity of the fish population in those areas (Maximum Sustained Yield) is obligatory.

It has just been reported that the EU’s bilateral fishing agreements with Morocco have been interrupted for reasons attributable to the Western Sahara region’s unclear acceptance of the agreements, but also due to a lack of expected results.

It is to be hoped that the forum in Tripoli on 29 October will produce clear intentions on the path to be taken and arrive at a precise conclusion that will see Italy and Libya as the protagonists of a new and desirable course in the fishing sector and related activities.
