Overall, Kisumu’s aquaculture industry is a vital component of the city’s economy, leveraging its natural resources to sustainably produce fish and support the livelihoods of local communities.

On a national level, aquaculture in Kenya plays a crucial role in both the livelihoods of fish farmers and the overall economy of the country. With a focus on fish farming, particularly tilapia, the industry provides employment opportunities and income generation for thousands of small-scale farmers across the country. This contributes significantly to food security, meeting the protein needs of the population, and reducing reliance on wild fish stocks. Moreover, the aquaculture sector boosts the national economy through export earnings and domestic sales, supporting rural development and economic growth. Despite facing challenges such as limited access to quality inputs and environmental sustainability issues, the aquaculture industry continues to expand, driven by the resilience and innovation of fish farmers and supported by government initiatives and private sector investments.
