Why feed management software is becoming essential in modern aquaculture

Why feed management software is becoming essential in modern aquaculture

Every kilogram of feed that is wasted affects profitability, water quality and, ultimately, fish health. For this reason, feed management is no longer just an operational task. It has become a strategic activity that can determine the success of a fish farm.

Modern aquaculture is increasingly relying on digital technologies to optimise feeding operations. Feed management software has evolved from a simple monitoring tool into a central platform connecting automatic feeders, sensors, production data and farm management systems.

A modern feed management platform does much more than activate feeders at scheduled times. It continuously collects, organises and analyses information that helps farmers make better decisions every day.

Operators can configure each tank individually, taking into account:

  • fish species;
  • biomass and stocking density;
  • fish size;
  • water temperature;
  • feeding schedules;
  • feed type and pellet size;
  • daily feeding percentages.

This level of customisation allows each tank to receive the feeding strategy it requires, instead of applying the same programme across the entire farm.

The software can calculate the daily ration according to the number of fish, their average weight, the estimated biomass, water temperature and the selected feeding table.

Farm managers can also manually increase or decrease the calculated ration when fish behaviour, appetite, health conditions or environmental parameters require an adjustment.

Better feed conversion ratio (FCR)

One of the greatest advantages of feed management software is its ability to improve the Feed Conversion Ratio, commonly known as FCR.

FCR measures how efficiently fish convert feed into body weight. It is calculated by dividing the quantity of feed distributed by the biomass gained during a specific period.

For example, an FCR of 1.2 means that 1.2 kilograms of feed were required to produce 1 kilogram of fish biomass. A lower FCR generally indicates more efficient feed utilisation.

By calculating feed requirements according to biomass, fish growth, environmental conditions, feed tables, and historical performance, the software helps deliver the right quantity of feed at the right moment.

The result is:

  • lower feed waste;
  • faster and more uniform growth;
  • reduced production costs;
  • higher profitability.

Since feed is normally the most expensive production input, even a small improvement in FCR can generate significant economic benefits over an entire production cycle.

A feed management platform can also use specific FCR tables according to fish size and water temperature. These tables allow the system to estimate biomass growth based on the quantity of feed delivered.

Full traceability from feed to harvest

Traceability has become increasingly important for producers, seafood buyers, certification bodies and public authorities.

Modern software records every feeding event and links it to individual fish batches and feed lots. This creates complete production records that simplify quality assurance, certification procedures and customer audits.

Digital traceability also makes it easier to investigate production performance and identify the causes of unexpected results.

When a feed alert occurs, batch records and historical feeding data can help identify all affected fish groups. Laboratory analysis of retained feed samples, combined with traceability information, may reveal feed quality deterioration, formulation errors, contamination, incorrect labelling or potential fraud within the feed supply chain.

This information can also help determine whether abnormal growth, mortality or health problems are associated with a specific feed batch or supplier.

The future is data-driven

The future of aquaculture will increasingly depend on digital decision-making.

Artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, machine learning and real-time environmental monitoring are already being integrated into feeding systems to improve production efficiency.

However, all these innovations require one essential foundation: reliable feed management software capable of collecting, organising and analysing production data.

For fish farmers, investing in feed management software is no longer simply about automation. It is about gaining greater control over one of the most critical aspects of aquaculture production, while improving profitability, fish welfare, traceability and environmental sustainability.

In a sector where margins are becoming tighter and sustainability standards continue to rise, digital feed management is rapidly becoming not just an advantage, but a necessity.
