Ancient Ocean Secrets Unearthed: 62-Million-Year-Old Fossil Site Discovered in Egypt’s Eastern Desert

Egypt’s Eastern Desert has yielded a remarkable scientific treasure, revealing one of the most complete snapshots yet of marine life recovering after the extinction of the dinosaurs.

A team of Egyptian and international researchers has uncovered a fossil site dating back approximately 62 million years, offering rare insight into a critical chapter in Earth’s history. Located in the Eastern Desert and known as Qreiya 3, the site contains hundreds of exceptionally preserved fish fossils representing more than 20 previously unknown species.

The discovery, recently published in Science Advances, is being hailed as a major breakthrough in paleontology. It sheds new light on how marine ecosystems rebounded after the catastrophic asteroid impact that ended the age of dinosaurs around 66 million years ago.

Scientists have long struggled to understand what happened in the oceans following the mass extinction event, which wiped out roughly three-quarters of all species on Earth. While evidence from terrestrial environments has been relatively abundant, the fossil record of marine life during this period has remained incomplete.

The newly discovered fossils are helping to fill that gap.

Researchers found that many of the species belonged to early members of fish groups that dominate modern oceans today. Their presence suggests that marine life recovered more rapidly than previously thought, with new species quickly evolving to occupy ecological roles left vacant by extinct organisms.

Equally striking is the absence of several major predatory fish groups that thrived before the extinction event. Their disappearance highlights the profound restructuring of ocean ecosystems that followed one of the most dramatic biological crises in Earth’s history.

What sets the Qreiya 3 site apart is its ability to capture an ancient open-ocean environment rather than a shallow coastal habitat. This provides scientists with a rare opportunity to examine how life adapted in offshore ecosystems during a time of significant environmental change and warming global temperatures.

Beyond its scientific significance, the discovery reinforces Egypt’s growing reputation as a global hub for paleontological research. In recent years, Egyptian scientists have contributed a series of internationally recognized fossil discoveries, helping position the country at the forefront of research into ancient biodiversity and evolution.

As investigations continue, researchers believe the site may yield even more discoveries, potentially transforming our understanding of how life on Earth recovered after one of its darkest moments.

More than 62 million years after these creatures swam through ancient seas, their remains are offering modern science a powerful reminder: even after mass extinction, life finds a way to adapt, evolve, and begin again.
