Cultivating Climate Resilience: Inside Zanzibar’s First Blue Economy Climathon
Beyond the postcard-perfect images of Zanzibar’s turquoise waters and white sand beaches lies a marine ecosystem under immense stress. For the coastal communities who depend on it, the changing climate is not a distant threat—it is a current economic reality. Rising sea temperatures have triggered widespread “ice-ice” disease, a stress-induced condition that bleaches and destroys seaweed crops, slashing the annual income of local seaweed farmers by 40% to 60%. Simultaneously, shifting fish migrations force small-scale artisanal fishers to venture further into open waters, incurring steep fuel costs, while coral bleaching threatens the very reefs that underpin the island’s eco-tourism sector.
To address these compounding challenges with localized, scalable solutions, Climate-KIC—in partnership with Coastal Biotech and the Bahari Network—recently launched the first-ever Blue Economy Climathon in Zanzibar. Backed by Irish Aid as part of the Adaptation Innovation Cluster, the hackathon-style event attracted over 300 applicants, selecting 50 key stakeholders to co-create climate-smart enterprises over an intensive three-day sprint.

Designing for Lived Realities
The cohort brought together a diverse cross-section of the island’s maritime ecosystem: marine scientists, tech innovators, university students, community leaders, and critically, the fishers and seaweed farmers experiencing these climate shifts firsthand.
Participants were divided into eight teams tasked with addressing three core operational pillars:

Rather than developing theoretical concepts in a vacuum, the teams utilized structured innovation methodologies, including Human-Centred Design, the Climate Causality Framework, and Lean Adaptation Canvas business modeling. This frameworks-driven approach forced innovators to constantly validate their assumptions against local constraints: Is this solution affordable for a smallholder farmer? Can a fisher operate this interface at sea? How does this hardware perform during the heavy monsoon season?
High-Impact Solutions: Mitigating Post-Harvest Loss and Climate Risks
The prototypes emerging from the Climathon targeted the most critical vulnerabilities in Zanzibar’s value chain.
1. Smart Cold Chain & Digital Marketplace (First Place)
The winning solution tackled the pervasive issue of post-harvest loss in artisanal fisheries, where small-scale fishers routinely lose 30% to 50% of their daily catch to spoilage due to an absolute lack of preservation infrastructure. The team engineered a dual-pronged model: decentralized, solar-powered cold storage hubs combined with a lightweight digital marketplace. By preserving the quality of the catch and connecting fishers directly with commercial buyers, the platform eliminates predatory middle-tier pricing and dramatically stabilizes coastal incomes.
2. Solar-Powered Seaweed Drying Infrastructure (Second Place)
The runner-up team addressed the primary bottleneck for the island’s 25,000 seaweed farmers—the majority of whom are women. Traditional ground-drying methods leave seaweed highly vulnerable to unpredictable rainfall, leading to contamination, mold, and reduced commercial grade quality. The team introduced an affordable, enclosed solar-powered drying system that isolates the product from moisture and contaminants, ensuring a consistent, high-value yield regardless of sudden weather shifts.

Moving from Prototype to Scale
The outputs of the Zanzibar Climathon are structurally integrated into a long-term incubation pipeline rather than ending at the pitch stage.

The top three teams have already entered a localized mentorship matrix with regional experts. The second-place team has established commercial partnerships with five seaweed processing companies in Pemba to pilot their initial solar-drying prototypes, actively drafting grant proposals to fund their first manufacturing run.
Ultimately, the true value of the initiative lies in ecosystem activation. By creating a collaborative intersection where marine biology meets data analytics, and traditional knowledge meets systems engineering, Zanzibar is establishing a blueprint for community-led, climate-resilient economic growth across the Western Indian Ocean.
