Dr. Patricia Puig: A female voice leading change in the ocean world

Dr. Patricia Puig’s journey reflects not only resilience but also innovation, leadership, and a vision for more inclusive and sustainable oceans.

As the world increasingly turns its attention to the blue economy and the urgent need to protect our oceans, women remain underrepresented in leadership positions across marine science and aquaculture. Despite progress, persistent gaps remain—something Dr. Patricia Puig sees as one of the greatest challenges facing women in the sector.

Dr. Puig, “The lack of female role models in marine sciences can discourage young women from pursuing these careers. It is essential that they see women in leadership roles, so they know their place here is not the exception but the norm.”

Her path began with a diverse academic foundation that took her across continents. She earned her Master’s in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation through the prestigious Erasmus Mundus program, studying at Ghent University (Belgium), the University of Oviedo (Spain), and conducting her thesis research at the Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology.

She then pursued a Ph.D. in Marine Protected Areas at the University of Bologna, Italy, where she developed multidisciplinary research on MPA effectiveness and management. Through this work, she gained transferable skills in leadership, facilitation, communication, and project management—essential for working in the marine science and conservation field. Later, she expanded her expertise through ThePowerMBA and several entrepreneurship programs, which strengthened her marketing, sales, and business management skills. As a certified PADI Scuba Instructor, she also developed teaching abilities and the capacity to solve problems efficiently and safely during field operations

From research to real-world impact

Throughout her career, Dr. Puig has combined scientific knowledge with practical impact. One of her most notable experiences was managing a project with Fauna & Flora International that supported the creation of the first network of Marine Protected Areas in São Tomé and Príncipe. Working with a dedicated local team, she coordinated efforts with communities, fishers, and government authorities to balance conservation goals with local livelihoods—a collaborative and long-term process that required patience, inclusion, and teamwork. In 2018, she founded Oceanogami, a consultancy that bridges science, policy, and community. Today, Oceanogami has grown into a network of more than 100 multidisciplinary experts working across the Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. The team includes both senior and emerging professionals who collaborate with governments and international organizations to design innovative, science-based solutions for ocean sustainability. As part of her mission, Dr. Puig also mentors women pursuing careers in the blue economy and marine conservation.

Most recently, Dr. Puig launched The Blue Society, a digital platform that connects marine professionals worldwide. It has quickly become a space to exchange job opportunities, share emerging trends, and foster collaboration across borders.

Vision and inspiration

Despite the hurdles women still face in the marine sector, Dr. Puig remains optimistic. She points to growing initiatives—mentorship programs, gender equality strategies, and supportive networks—as signs of real change.

Her message to the next generation of women in the ocean sector is clear and empowering:

“Believe in your passion, keep learning, and build strong professional networks. The path may be full of challenges, but your presence in this field is not only welcome—it is essential for ensuring a sustainable future for our oceans.”

Her words remind us that the ocean, vast and resilient, mirrors the journey of those who dedicate their lives to protecting it. Every wave of change begins with voices like hers, determined and unwavering. In her story, one can recognize not only an accomplished professional but an inspiring presence whose path lights the way for others to follow.
