Tumbe Seaweed Farmers: Empowering Women and Youth through Seaweed 

Just as farming on land has long sustained generations and shaped rural livelihoods, a new promise is steadily rising from the ocean. Seaweed farming, quietly thriving beneath the tides, offers a deal that is hard to ignore: an enterprise that restores marine ecosystems while creating dignified income for coastal communities. With minimal inputs, no competition for land, and a growing global demand, farming at sea is no longer a distant alternative but a compelling frontier where nature, nutrition, and economic empowerment meet.

Located in Vungujini, Msambweni, Tumbe Seaweed Farmers is a community-based organization dedicated to empowering women and youth through sustainable seaweed farming. Msambweni Sub-County, Kenya, is home to an estimated 160,000 to 180,000 people, with a predominantly youthful population and livelihoods largely dependent on small-scale fishing, subsistence farming, and informal trade. Despite this, the area continues to face high unemployment levels, particularly among youths and women, with youth unemployment estimated to be above 35% and women largely engaged in low-income, informal, and unpaid labor.

Established in 2020, the group has steadily emerged as a model for community-led development, demonstrating how ocean-based livelihoods can address poverty while promoting environmental conservation. By equipping local communities with practical skills and knowledge, Tumbe Seaweed Farmers enables its members to break the cycle of poverty, strengthen household incomes, and build long-term resilience rooted in the sustainable use of marine resources.

Growing Livelihoods from the Ocean

Limited economic opportunities along the coast have historically contributed to poverty and social vulnerability. Tumbe Seaweed Farmers addresses these challenges by providing hands-on training in seaweed farming, post-harvest handling, and basic entrepreneurship. This approach ensures participants are not only producers but informed stewards of coastal ecosystems.

Women’s economic empowerment remains central to the initiative. As women gain financial independence, households experience improved stability, children remain in school, and youth are offered viable livelihood pathways within their own communities.

The group has been the gracious beneficiary of the support from Plan International Kenya under the COSME Project—Conservation and Sustainable Management of Coastal and Marine Ecosystems. This support has significantly strengthened capacity-building efforts, enhanced environmental stewardship, and reinforced sustainable livelihood development.

A Mission Rooted in Social and Environmental Impact

A clear and people-centered mission guides Tumbe Seaweed Farmers. By 2026, the organization aims to train and empower over 500 women and youth in seaweed farming and the production of value-added products. The initiative directly supports climate change mitigation, promotes sustainable fisheries, and provides alternative livelihoods that reduce pressure on overexploited marine resources.

Beyond economic gains, the organization contributes to addressing persistent social challenges such as early marriages, domestic violence, and poverty, using economic empowerment as a tool for dignity, choice, and community well-being.

Value Addition and Product Development

In addition to producing raw and dried seaweed, Tumbe Seaweed Farmers has expanded into the development of value-added products to enhance market competitiveness and income generation. These products include soaps, shower gels, shampoos, chili sauce, sea moss powder, and sea moss gel, which are increasingly recognized for their nutritional and health benefits. Through participation in processing and product development, members capture greater value along the supply chain, strengthening household incomes while building a resilient, community-owned enterprise.

Call for Partnerships and Investment

To scale its impact and reach more beneficiaries, Tumbe Seaweed Farmers invites investors, grant makers, and development partners to collaborate in advancing its vision. Support will enable expanded training programs, improved access to quality farming inputs, and increased market access for seaweed products. Through strategic partnerships, the organization seeks to foster sustainable community development, empower women and youth, and promote responsible management of coastal and marine ecosystems.
