Green Paradise LY: Laying the Groundwork for Water-Wise Food Systems in Libya – In the face of climate crises and acute water scarcity in Libya, a promising youth-led initiative called Green Paradise LY is blooming in the south. Founded by a group of passionate young professionals, the project is spearheaded by Seraj mohammed bisheya, an agricultural economics and business management specialist who holds an international diploma in hydroponics from the Austrian Hydroponics Institute. Alongside him is Mouner banour saleh, who shares the same academic background. The team also includes experts in entrepreneurship, business administration, and agricultural engineering, with practical experience gained through collaborations with international development organizations.
From Concept to Launch
The idea for Green Paradise LY emerged from direct field observation of the challenges facing Libya’s agriculture sector, especially under increasing climate pressure and water shortages. After a training experience in Austria, the team recognized hydroponics as a practical solution, offering up to 90% water savings compared to traditional agriculture while producing high quality yields in small spaces ideal for Libya’s arid environment. The project officially launched on the ground in February 2020.
Pioneering Achievements in Southern Libya
Since its inception, the team has established the first fully integrated hydroponic system in southern Libya, in partnership with international organizations such as the World Food Programme (WFP) and Expertise France. They have trained over 100 young farmers in smart and sustainable agriculture techniques and implemented demonstration units in schools and youth centers to raise awareness about food security and climate change. Additionally, collaboration with the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation led to the implementation of projects benefiting around 70 farmers in the region.
Technical Support and Recognition
Green Paradise LY received both technical and logistical support from organizations like Expertise France, the European Union, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). In 2023, the project was selected among the top five emerging startups in an agricultural business accelerator program.
Active Engagement in National and International Forums
The team actively promotes their vision beyond Libya’s borders. They participated in the Youth Forum on Migration and Climate Change in Iraq in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and took part in the Energy and Climate Conference in Cairo, organized by the Union for the Mediterranean. They also represented Libya in the “Arab Pioneers” program organized by the Arab Youth Center in the UAE, and at the Kuwait Energy and Climate Week.Green Paradise LY was selected to participate in the European Green Week in Belgium, a recognition that highlights its growing impact on the regional and international stage.
Real Challenges, Stronger Motivation
Despite its success, the initiative faces significant obstacles, including weak infrastructure, limited access to local funding, and a general lack of awareness about the benefits of hydroponics. Importing essential materials and equipment also remains a logistical challenge that calls for creative, localized solutions.
Future Plans and Expanding Vision
The team remains optimistic about the future of hydroponics in Libya. They are currently working on expanding operations to the western coast and mountainous areas, designing mobile hydroponic units tailored for farmers in remote regions. In the short term, they aim to establish a dedicated training center, and in the long term, they hope to transform Green Paradise LY into a national and regional model for smart, climate-resilient agriculture.
Scientific Partnerships and Knowledge Exchange
Green Paradise LY maintains ongoing cooperation with Libyan universities, encouraging final-year projects focused on smart agriculture. The initiative has also partnered with NGOs dedicated to innovation in agriculture and climate action, with a clear intent to broaden these networks in the near future.
An Open Invitation
The team welcomes support from individuals and institutions willing to contribute to the mission whether through sponsoring training programs, offering technical advice, or volunteering in awareness activities. They are also open to research and logistical partnerships with universities, civil society organizations, and stakeholders in sustainable agriculture.
Green Paradise LY is more than a farming initiative it’s a story of young minds transforming passion and knowledge into tangible solutions for one of Libya’s most vital sectors.
